Daily fantasy sports entrepreneurs looking for the next growth region should look no further than India, where the product has begun to gain impressive traction with the country’s legions of sports fans.

According to DraftKings chief international officer Jeffrey Haas, a small pool of local operators have been finding commercial success in India by running popular daily fantasy cricket tournaments alongside other domestic sports.

Speaking at this year’s SiGMA in Malta, Haas cited Dream 11 as one of the key India-facing daily fantasy sports operators, adding that the firm had done “extraordinary business” in the region.

Currently, around seven million people in India are known to play daily fantasy sports, with participation rates growing at around 30-50 percent per year. Internet access is also growing rapidly in the country, with 500 million people able to log on this year, and around 400 million able to access the web via their smartphones.

Address DFS entrepreneurs in the audience, Haas urged them to “take an international view” and recognise the market potential of the huge pool of sports fans around the world.

While billions of people regularly follow one or more sports, only sixty million people are currently playing daily fantasy sports, giving the sector huge growth potential, he said.
